London Museums
0530 I’ve slept much better and almost solidly until about 0430. After a couple of attempts to get back to sleep I decide to get a coffee and start planning the day. I was thinking of heading to Winchester today, but I had such a nice day in the city yesterday that I think I’ll stay around and do some museums today. I’ve read about a postal museum and it’s been ages since I last went to the science museum. Most museums have recommended booking a time so I’ve planned my day and got tickets. It means the day is a bit more fixed than I’d prefer but should be ok.
0730 Breakfast.
0800 I manage to finish two new blog entries.
0925 I head to the postal museum on foot. This time I’m going to take my umbrella. I pass some interesting street scenes and street art on the way.
0945 Arrive. A few people are waiting too. My timed ticket is for the mail rail so I need to start there.
1000 I get on the mail rail first. It takes a journey through the old mail tunnels.
1120 The rest of the museum is really interesting too. At the end I grab some morning tea from the café.
1130 I’m making good time so I walk back to the hotel to drop off my purchases.
1148 Arrive. The walk to the museum had been cool and quiet. It’s still now mild but a little humid and the crowds are beginning.
The first stay in this hotel was on the second floor. I used the stairs to go up and down. This time I’m in the sixth floor, so it’s the lift going up and stairs going down.
1200 Time to slowly walk to the next museum. I leave my umbrella; I can easily get between the next places by tube if need be.
1220 I get to Oxford circus. I’m early so I might try to find some lunch. Pret will do.
1300 I get to the Twist Museum. Lots of cool optical and sensory illusions. Many I have seen before but it’s still fascinating and a bit mind bending.
1340 I took my time but finished. Might have taken longer if I’d come with other people as some needed another person. Never mind.
1346 Victoria line from Oxford Circus to Green Park.
1349 Arrive.
1353 Piccadilly line to South Kensington.
1358 Arrive.
My ticket to the science museum is for 3pm so I have a little bit of time to kill. Seems like I timed things nicely. No rushing.
As I walk to the science museum I pass the V&A museum and remember that the Diva exhibition will have started now. I go in but tickets have sold out for today. I grab a drink instead and sit in the courtyard. The sun briefly appears.
1440 Still early so I take a stroll to a nearby park.
1500 I enter the science museum.
1630 I’ve had a nice wander through. Some exhibits I remember from last time and some were new. Flight was interesting and the original flight models were cool. I stop for a snack in the café before heading to the shop.
1700 I get another ingredients t-shirt. Then it’s time to make my way back.
1713 Piccadilly line from South Kensington to Holborn.
1726 Arrive. I thought it might be busy but it got more quiet as we progressed.
I drop past the hotel to pick up a shopping bag and head on to Sainsbury’s for some toiletries.
1758 Back at the hotel. I’m pooped! It’s been a long day and my feet are killing me. I feel that I’ve made very good use of the last 2 days.
