Final Photos

It’s been a couple of weeks since my return from the UK and Switzerland and I’ve finally finished going through all my photos. This process involves cataloguing, grading and editing. It takes a while.

Here are my favourites. If you were following my blog, you’ve probably seen earlier versions of most of these photos, but I think these ones are better. As with all my blog posts, you can see a larger version by clicking on a picture. Below the gallery I’m going to write about my photography post-processes, including some statistics from this trip.

All photos were taken either with my iPhone 13 Pro or my Canon EOS 90D + EF-S18-200mm lens. The following graph shows the distribution of each.

For the first time, on this trip I took more photos with my phone than my camera. There are a few reasons for this. Firstly, the cameras on the new iPhones are really good. Since I subbornly insist on using manual mode on my camera, it’s often quicker to use my phone when time is limited or conditions are challenging. Secondly, when there are people around, my phone is less intimidating and I get fewer “looks”. Having said that, nearly all of my favourite photos were taken with my camera.

Post-processing firstly involved filtering out all the (many) duds and duplicates from the 5,000+ photos. That left about 2,700 photos that I want to keep either for their aesthetic appeal or memory value. After grading quality, I whittled this down to just over 500 “good” photos. These will be my highlights and I spent time making edits including cropping and light adjustments. From these I chose my absolute favorites, most of which are in this blog.

Getting Home

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 5:07 AM • THE CIRCLE 1, KLOTEN • 17°C CLOUDY

I sleep quite well. The bed is huge and comfortable with an assortment of pillows and it’s nice and cool in the room. All the same, from midnight it’s an hourly wake up. At 4:30 I try to get back to sleep but my mind is already engaged and I decide that an early wake up won’t be so bad for adjusting to home timezone anyway. I make a coffee and drink more water to rehydrate from yesterday.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 6:32 AM • THE CIRCLE 1, KLOTEN • 17°C CLOUDY

I head down to breakfast.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 6:41 AM • THE CIRCLE 1, KLOTEN • 17°C CLOUDY

Usual restaurant anxiety but it’s all very smooth and easy. Though the enthusiastic greeting I get when I arrive is a little over the top. Ends up being a very relaxed breakfast.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 7:18 AM • THE CIRCLE 1, KLOTEN • 18°C MOSTLY CLOUDY

Back in my room, getting ready to leave. Staying at the airport has made for such a relaxed morning. I know I only have to wander across the courtyard to get to the airport. And this airport is so close to the city that I could have still travelled into central Zurich to spend time there yesterday had I wanted to. It also means I can wait in my room here for longer and spend less time in the airport.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 7:50 AM • THE CIRCLE 1, KLOTEN • 18°C MOSTLY CLOUDY

All packed and ready to go.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 8:38 AM • TERMINAL 2, KLOTEN • 18°C MOSTLY CLOUDY

Checked in to flight. Suitcase was only 24kg. Camera bag was 5kg and other black carry on bag 4kg. In total, that’s less than I was expecting. I pause to cool down before heading through security.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 9:41 AM • TERMINAL 2, KLOTEN • 20°C PARTLY CLOUDY

Get to the gate just as last boarding call. That took much longer than I had expected. For a start there was a really long queue for passport control. And then it turns out that the gate was miles away at the other end of the airport and had to use a transit train to get there. All good now. I can relax.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 9:43 AM • TERMINAL 2, KLOTEN • 20°C PARTLY CLOUDY

This flight is an A350-900, which I particularly like because they are one of the few long haul planes that still have air vents that you can control. Helps me to cool off.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 9:49 AM • TERMINAL 2, KLOTEN • 20°C PARTLY CLOUDY

A glass of rose champagne before departure.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 9:57 AM • TERMINAL 2, KLOTEN

Side note: At the start of this trip I was using OneNote (which is my primary note taking app) as my journal tool. I had pre-populated pages for each day of my trip but I still found myself scrolling around a lot. And I had to manually insert times when I remembered. Near the end of my stay in St. Moritz I figured there must be apps that are optimized for this kind of use. So, since then I have been using Day One. What I like about it is that I can just add entries without thinking about which notebook page I am on and it will automatically stamp each entry with date, time, location and weather. I can tag entires also, though I’m not sure if I would make use of that. I can export the notes in a variety of ways for converting to blog entries or a book.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 10:33 AM • ZURICH AIRPORT, KLOTEN

Depart. Nearly 1/2 hour late but I assume they will make that up. Plenty of time before my next flight anyway.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 10:47 AM

Great views of Zurich as we depart.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 11:12 AM

I watch some episodes of The Repair Shop.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 12:03 PM

Well, that’s a first. The forward loo on this aircraft has a window!

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 12:06 PM

Time for some lunch. I had decided to wait for a couple of hours after take off. The Arabic mezze plate is delicious. Don’t know why I haven’t tried it before. For main, I have the veal. It’s INCREDIBLY tender.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 12:41 PM

Lunch was delicious and I’m full now. No room for dessert at the moment. So far, the flight has been smooth with good views of the ground below.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 2:31 PM

As we fly over Iraq I’m actually feeling quite dozy. But only and hour and a quarter left, so no point trying to have a nap.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 3:04 PM

It will be 43 degrees in Doha!

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 3:16 PM

Coming into Doha there are two other planes flying in parallel with us.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 4:45 PM • HAMAD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, DOHA • 40°C WINDY

Landed in Doha.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 4:50 PM • HAMAD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, DOHA • 40°C WINDY

Looks like we’ll be disembarking onto bus. In this heat? Yuk! Ends up being OK as I’m so cool from the plane and the bus is nicely air conditioned.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 5:16 PM • TERMINAL, DOHA • 40°C WINDY

In the lounge. 3 hours until the next flight.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 5:22 PM • TERMINAL, DOHA • 40°C WINDY

I spend some time sorting through photos from yesterday’s train journey.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 7:15 PM • TERMINAL, DOHA • 38°C MOSTLY CLEAR

Feeling surprisingly fresh.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 7:34 PM • HAMAD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, DOHA • 38°C MOSTLY CLEAR

At boarding gate. A bit early but should only have a few minutes to wait.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 8:00 PM • HAMAD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, DOHA • 37°C MOSTLY CLEAR

On board. It’s a B777-300ER and it has air vents too! That’s surprising. Though the temperature is definitely not as nice and cool as the last flight. Flight should be about 12 hours which is a little shorter than scheduled.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 8:57 PM • HAMAD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, DOHA

Depart Doha.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 10:04 PM

Dinner. I’ve chosen the salmon, pasta and orange mousse.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 8:11 PM • PERSIAN GULF

Unfortunately, this plane doesn’t have The Repair Shop on the entertainment. I try out Everyone Else Burns.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 9:20 PM • ARABIAN SEA

Finished dinner. That was nice. Think I’ll watch a couple more episodes then try to get some sleep. It’s nice and cool in the cabin. Just the start of some slight turbulence.

THURSDAY, 20 JUL 2023 AT 11:25 PM

Here goes. I try to grab some sleep.

FRIDAY, 21 JUL 2023 AT 12:22 AM

Very bumpy.

FRIDAY, 21 JUL 2023 AT 2:55 AM • INDIAN OCEAN

A bit better now. I check the time. Still so far to go!

FRIDAY, 21 JUL 2023 AT 3:10 AM • INDIAN OCEAN

My jaws hurt. I think I’ve been clenching with all of the turbulence.

FRIDAY, 21 JUL 2023 AT 3:29 AM

I did get probably an hour of sleep to begin with and then maybe an hour or two of dozing since then. But it’s daylight now and I don’t think I can sleep anymore. Besides, it would be better for my body clock to start syncing with the daylight again. I’d love a coffee but the seatbelt sign is currently on and I’ll have to wait. I continue watching the TV series. Currently flying over the East Indian Ocean. I try to check remaining time on the flight map but this one is only displaying in Arabic and it’s hard to word out which numbers are which.

FRIDAY, 21 JUL 2023 AT 4:29 AM

Seatbelt sign is off so I can get that coffee.

FRIDAY, 21 JUL 2023 AT 5:03 AM • INDIAN OCEAN

I start another series, Nolly, staring Helen Bonham Carter

FRIDAY, 21 JUL 2023 AT 6:43 AM • INDIAN OCEAN

Breakfast time. The omelette.

FRIDAY, 21 JUL 2023 AT 3:30 PM • ADELAIDE AIRPORT, NETLEY • 14°C MOSTLY CLOUDY

Landed Adelaide.

St. Moritz to Zurich

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 6:15 AM • VIA DIMLEJ 6, ST. MORITZ • 11°C MOSTLY CLOUDY

I slept OK. Still broken but some solid blocks. Time for coffee.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 7:15 AM • VIA DIMLEJ 6, ST. MORITZ • 12°C PARTLY CLOUDY

Breakfast.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 7:37 AM • VIA DIMLEJ 6, ST. MORITZ • 12°C PARTLY CLOUDY

Packing time. As I only have one more brief night in Zurich, I’m going to try and put everything I need from now on, including on the flight, in my black bag. Then I shouldn’t need to open the white suitcase again. That would make this the last pack. Yay!

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 9:02 AM • VIA DIMLEJ 6, ST. MORITZ • 14°C PARTLY CLOUDY

I managed to close my suitcase without expansion. I have about an hour until I need to check out, so time to finish my blog entry for yesterday.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 9:21 AM

It’s just started to lightly rain. Then it gets heavier with thunder and lightening. The forecast says these will be intermittent. Lucky this is a travel day, otherwise it would be a washout. Hopefully there will be a gap for me to walk to the station, otherwise I’ll need a taxi.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 10:06 AM • VIA DIMLEJ 6, ST. MORITZ • 16°C ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS

Check out time. They have a shuttle service to take me to the station as it’s still raining a bit.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 10:20 AM • PLAZZA DA LA STAZIUN 4, ST. MORITZ • 16°C PARTLY CLOUDY

I get to the station and grab something for lunch later. Of course, now the rain has stopped. I check the board and my train is listed. Looking good so far. About 1/2 hour to wait but I’d rather be here and ready.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 10:34 AM • ST. MORITZ, ST. MORITZ • 17°C PARTLY CLOUDY

Feeling a degree of the usual travel anxiety. But at the same time, I feel I’ve got this.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 10:49 AM • ST. MORITZ, ST. MORITZ • 17°C PARTLY CLOUDY

I go to the platform early and discover the train is already waiting. Great. Gives me plenty of time to board. Lots of luggage space and seating.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 11:05 AM • VEIA DA PRADA 45, TIEFENCASTEL • 21°C PARTLY CLOUDY

Depart St. Moritz.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 11:38 AM • VEIA DA PRADA 45, TIEFENCASTEL • 21°C PARTLY CLOUDY

There’s a catering trolley onboard. Wasn’t expecting that on this train.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 12:22 PM • VEIA DA PRADA 45, TIEFENCASTEL • 21°C PARTLY CLOUDY

This trip to Chur is tracking the same route as the Glacier Express.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 1:04 PM • PULVERMÜHLESTRASSE 3, CHUR

Arrive Chur. Once again, my next train is waiting. An even nicer train than last time and hardly anyone in 1st class.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 1:16 PM • RHEINDAMMWEG, MASTRILS • 21°C MOSTLY CLOUDY

Depart.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 1:27 PM • A3, PLONS • 25°C PARTLY CLOUDY

Light rain as we leave Landquart.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 1:39 PM • A3, PLONS • 25°C PARTLY CLOUDY

Now that this final train journey is underway I can feel my back and neck muscles relaxing for the first time in a while.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 2:47 PM • NEUFRANKENGASSE 18, ZÜRICH • 27°C PARTLY CLOUDY

Arrive Zurich. I find my way around fairly easily and get to the platform in good time. Train not waiting this time.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 2:58 PM • BAHNHOFPLATZ/HAUPTBAHNHOF, ZÜRICH • 28°C PARTLY CLOUDY

On the next train. It only takes 9 min to get to the airport. Train busier and it might have been a squeeze with luggage in 2nd class but 1st was OK. At my seat will do for such a short trip.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 3:03 PM • ZÜRICH, ZÜRICH • 27°C PARTLY CLOUDY

Depart Zurich.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 3:12 PM • KLOTEN, KLOTEN • 28°C MOSTLY CLEAR

Arrive Zurich airport. Now I need to find my way to the hotel.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 3:34 PM • THE CIRCLE 1, KLOTEN • 28°C MOSTLY CLEAR

Checked-in to the hotel. It’s a bit of a rabbit warren to find the hotel and then to find my room, but the room is quite lush. Massive bed. No view to speak of, but this is the airport. My flight tomorrow is not super early but I decided to stay here instead of in the city just to reduce the morning stress.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 3:50 PM • THE CIRCLE 1, KLOTEN • 28°C MOSTLY CLEAR

I head out to The Circle which is a food and shopping precinct attached to the hotel and airport.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 4:42 PM • THE CIRCLE 1, KLOTEN • 28°C MOSTLY CLEAR

Back at the hotel. Didn’t find anything I wanted to buy. Might look again when I’m waiting for my flight tomorrow. On the way back I did walk through a park that is adjacent to The Circle. It’s a surprising green oasis at an airport and a nice place to hang out if you will be here for a while.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 6:23 PM • THE CIRCLE 43, KLOTEN • 27°C MOSTLY CLEAR

I head out again and find a nice salad bowl from Pret. All I really wanted.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 7:19 PM • THE CIRCLE 1, KLOTEN • 26°C MOSTLY CLEAR

Back in my room. Watching a bit of TV before bed. No need to rush in the morning.

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUL 2023 AT 8:46 PM • THE CIRCLE 1, KLOTEN • 24°C MOSTLY CLEAR

Bed time.

Mouttas Muragl

0600 Sleep was a little broken but at least I slept until about 6 am. Feeling a bit stiff but could be worse, considering yesterdays walk.

0730 Breakfast. Talked to Australian family on next table. They’ve been here a couple of days and are heading to Paris next. I would normally be anxious about talking to people I didn’t know, but here when I hear an Australian or English accent it feels like a relief to engage a little bit.

0840 I feel up for a bit of a walk today so I decide to walk to another funicular railway. Should take about 50 min.

Water in the lake is so clear I see a small school of fish.

Current temp 15 degrees. Clear and still.

A bit of a climb at first but ok.

Walking along path with small butterflies fly all around.

Lots of high altitude planes overhead.

So busy enjoying the scenery I miss a turn off. But soon back on track.

Birdsong.

0930 Downhill now.

0950 Arrive Mouttas Muragl. Distance tracked at 3.8 km, 101m up and 147m down.

The next train is at 1015. Time for a rest and cool down.

1000 Getting really busy so I head inside and there’s a train ready to go. I jump on board.

1012 Arrive. Wow! That was steep and a little bit unnerving when you look down. I had wondered if another mountain viewpoint would be worth it, but it is! Spectacular views all around.

There is a sign for a path to go to the very top. Should take 90 min with elevation 110m. I am tempted but I really want to do other things this afternoon and this current level is already serving mountain greatness. Also, at this altitude, I know even 100m elevation will be tough for me. I decide to hang out here a bit instead.

The free travel pass I was given at check in has been great because all of the funicular and cable cars were included.

1120 There’s a self service café so I grab morning tea and manage some fractured German to order. I get the nusstorte; the local specialty. Delicious.

1200 Time to head down. The next train is as 1215 (I think I’ve got it right this time). I’m one of the first so I could get at the end facing down but I don’t think I would like that.

1215 Depart.

1224 Arrive.

1227 I start the walk back to the hotel. I’m aiming for roughly the same walk with maybe a slight variation. Because I’ve already walked this path I decide to leave my camera in my backpack and focus more on the experience going back.

1246 At a crossroad. If I head to Lej da Staz it will be flatter and different scenery but less forest. So I decide to return the way I came even though it will be tough at first.

1257 Not quite at the top, I find a nice rock to sit and rest on to catch my breath.

1310 I think I’m at the top. Phew!

1315 I come to a junction and decide to take the shorter route. My map shows it passing a curious rectangular object. Further i along I discover that to be a firing range with warning signs. Um, no. I won’t go that way thanks.

1400 Arrive hotel.

1432 After uploading photos and generally resting, I have a shower to feel clean again.

1448 I put in my sneakers to go out and I can feel a blister on my left foot. Ouch!

1451 I set out. I want to visit the main part of St Moritz and look in a few shops (not the fancy ones). It's becoming overcast but no indication of rain. Wouldn't matter if I got wet anyway.

1504 To get to the main street you go up a long series of undercover escalators in the same building as the design gallery.

1544 I'm hungry so I try to find a roll to take away. But this is St Moritz and it's mainly high end shops. I end up in the Coop supermarket. When I come out it has started to rain. I hope it's only going to be light but then the thunder and lightning start. Weather app says isolated thunder storms, so I hope it will pass. Otherwise I'll need to find a taxi or get drenched. I think of buying another umbrella but it's windy and I don't think that will help. Luckily I find some cover so I can eat my roll.

1551 I remember that the escalators connect to a car park that connects to the train station. That should be a way to get most of the way undercover. I've always got tomorrow morning for gift shopping.

1557 I make it to the station without getting too wet and it does seem to be stopping.

1604 There's a mini mart at the station so I grab some snacks before attempting the next part.

1611 I make it back to the hotel without really getting wet.

1655 More thunder, lightening and rain. Nice to be inside watching it pass. I spend time working on my blog.

1847 I've finished editing all the photos from the last two days and one blog entry. But I'm stiff now from crouching over. Another thunderstorm passes over and it's really bucketing down. Will just watch some TV or YouTube (or the storm) now and get and earlyish night.

1901 I hadn't noticed before but all the church bells chime at 7pm.

2125 Time for bed.

The Lake, Corviglia and a Long Walk Home

0530 The  room was much cooler and I didn’t have any problems overheating. Slept better, only waking a couple of times. But I’m awake now and feeling a little stiff. The usual adjustment to a new bed and the excitement of a new location.

0600 Coffee time.

From what I’ve seen so far, St Moritz has a very different vibe to Zermatt. Less alpine and more cosmopolitan.

0700 Breakfast. The setup seems a bit different to the other hotels. Breakfast is included so you just seem to walk in and help yourself. No asking for room numbers or anything. Felt a little lost at first. The food is the usual. Enough to keep me going for a while.

The staff definitely not as accommodating with English, which is fine. Felt bad for not attempting any German. Will try harder.

The plan for today is to go for a walk around the lake and then take the funicular as a starting point for another walk.

0810 I head to walk around the lake. Just taking camera and no bag on this bit.

There are a few people out walking or running. Great reflections on the lake. The sounds of cars is so different to Zermatt. More like a city.

0945 Arrive back at hotel. Have a short break.

1000 I head out again. This time towards the funicular.

1025 Board train.

1040 Depart.

1042 Arrive Chantarella and change trains.

1052 Depart.

1059 Arrive Corviglia.

Lots of bike riders. Seems to be a thing. It’s not quite what I was expecting. More like a base for trails and cable cars. I spend some time deciding what to do. There are trails from here down but they look quite boring. No vegetation. Just hill face.

1114 I decide to be brave and catch the cable car to the top. It will be fine. Really. Just don’t look down.

1120 Depart. It’s fine apart from when we go over the towers. Don’t like that much.

1132 Arrive.

Great views and some nice photo shots. But not much I want to do. Could explore on foot but the climbs will be too much for me.

1205 Depart to return to Corviglia.

When I get to the bottom I head toward the café and spot Jo and Jenna from the train yesterday. Lovely to see them again and we chat for a while. I don’t take many opportunities to engage with strangers but this was delightful. Oh, and Jo very generously shouted me my coffee (see I didn’t forget, Jo).

1310 I take the funicular back down to Chantarella.

1317 Arrive.

1325 There’s a place serving food outside the station but the usual anxiety kicks in: where do I order, how does it work? But I know it would be foolish to start walking without food so I dive in and order something. No problemo.

1410 I start my walk. I want to start with the Heidi Blumenweg. It’s pitched as a nature path with beds of all types of wildflowers. But clearly this is the wrong time of the year and little is flowering. And in little beds they loose much of their impact. I was hoping for meadows.

I decide to walk on and wind back to St Moritz. But then I get glimpses of the next lakes and decide to try and reach them.

1500 I hit roads. Not nice walking.

1540 After winding my way through Champfer I get back onto a path and make it to the lake.

Water incredibly clear.

I’m a long way from where I originally planned and I’ve walked about 6 km. It’s going to be the same getting back. I look for the most scenic route.

1550 I start heading back. It’s not all scenic but at least I get a bit more forest.

1630 I reach the St Moritz lake.

1638 Not far to go but I take the opportunity to rest on a bench by the lake first. There’s a nice cool breeze and mainly clear skies.

1655 Back at hotel. I think a bath would be a good idea.

That walk was much further than I had planned. Tracked at 10.6 km. And unfortunately, not enough of it was through great scenery. But at least I’ve been active. That will probably do me for this trip. Got a feeling I will be stiff and sore tomorrow.

1740 After a nice soak I spend some time on photos and blog.

1815 I’m hungry after my long walk so I brave going to the hotel restaurant.

Hmm. What an experience. The food is nice enough and they tolerate my English. But it is like stepping into a time warp. Very old fashioned. And there is a trio (accordion, clarinet and bass) playing traditional music quite loudly. Not my thing at all. Plus the dining room is uncomfortably warm. It’s bad enough dining alone in a place I like. Won’t come here again.

1958 Glad that’s over. Back in my room comfortable again doing some more work on photos and blog.

2126 Bed time (and that same family making noise again).

The Glacier Express

0530 I slept better. By keeping the bathroom window open I think I managed to make it a bit cooler. Plus keeping my feet out of the quilt stopped me from getting too warm. Of course, today I need to be up and out, so here I am awake early again. Never mind.

0545 Coffee time. I activate my rail pass for today. Works first time. These passes are very easy to use.

0550 Time to pack. Then I can relax.

0630 Bags 95% packed. I need to stop worrying that it will take a long time. Roughly 30 min now.

Feeling a little off this morning. Might just need some breakfast. Or it might be travel anxiety.

It’s another lovely day outside. 11 degrees and clear.

0700 Breakfast. I go for the power bowl of oats, chia seeds and berries. I’m the only one here again.

Looking out of the dining room window I see one of the small electric vehicles buzzing around. Zermatt is a car-free town, but there are still plenty of the small utility vehicles, mini taxis and mini buses to look out for.

0730 Back in my room. I have a little bit of time to finish packing and chill a bit to manage this anxiety.

0745 I pop out for a short stroll.

Feeling super self conscious today will need to psyche myself out of it.

0810 Check out.

0822 I get to the station and can board straight away. It’s fancy! Nice to be able to settle and cool down. The concierge takes care of my luggage. That’s nice. Glad I got on early so I could take some photos before there were people.

0852 Depart.

The train gently tilts.

All the rivers look milky. I assume this is quartz? I look it up. It’s due to minerals including pyrite.

0952 Glass of champagne? Why not?

First hour is very similar to landscape around Zermatt. I can feel we have reduced altitude because my ears popped.

I’m sitting among a family of 5 Americans. Odd energy. I’d almost prefer someone chatty. When they arrived the father sat down without any acknowledgement. I know I’m pretty reserved but I would at least smile or say hello if there was already someone sitting. .

At Brig I am offered the opportunity to change seats because another double seat is now empty. I take it since that means I’ll be on my own. Less awkward than trying to avoid the family who are still acting a bit weird. Or maybe it’s me.

The new seat is facing forward which means it’s sunnier. Not so good for photos but much better for getting a panoramic view. And I feel much more relaxed here.

Lovely traveling friends Jo and Jenna from UK sitting opposite. Chat a little bit. Jo is traveling to Costa Rica in December to celebrate brother’s 50th birthday! Different dates but what a coincidence.

1434 At Chur the train doubles back. As I have a double seat all to myself I can change to stay facing forward.

Ended up chatting to Jo and Jenna on and off for the trip. Made it nicer. And we swapped sides for photo ops every now and then.

1636 Arrive St. Moritz.

Note: due to “technical difficulties” the photos are not necessarily in sequence.

The entire journey, food and service was exceptional. Don’t regret the expense at all.

I check Google for instructions to walk to the hotel. It’s not really clear and I veer off course. After correcting myself I find an even easier way to get to the lake. But then I see the climb to the hotel! Argh! One criteria for my hotels is walking distance from train station but this incline is going to hurt. At least it will be easy when I leave!

1700 I get to the hotel and check in. My room is nice. The largest I’ve stayed in so far. It has an awesome lake view and a window that fully opens. Finally I can sleep well.

The weather is patchy cloud and 17 degrees. Lovely.

I suspect the hotel is actually a little bit out of the main town but that’s fine by me. Being on the lake and close to walks is more important.

1800 After a shower and change I head downstairs and outside to explore a little. I don’t think I’ll be having dinner tonight. I’ve been eating and drinking all day.

Although German still seems to be the dominant language, Italian seems to have replaced French as the secondary language.

1844 I walk a short way around. It’s a big lake. I look forward to walking properly another day.

I have picked up some information from the hotel about walks and I spend time planning possible activities.

I took over 400 photos on my phone, though many are throwaways due to obstructions, poor light or reflections. I don’t think any will do justice to the actual views but they will provide a suitable record and memento of the journey. The journey was one of those cases where the experience can’t really be captured.

2000 Time for a special cooper family video call.

2130 I should go to bed. The room is nice and cool and I think I will nod off quickly even though there is a family in a nearby room making huge amount of noise (having fun).

Sunnega and Gorner Gorge

0530 I slept about the same as last night. Alarm has gone off so I can get ready for game time with Em. Another clear morning.

0600 Video call with Em. We don’t manage to get Catan working but it’s lovely to have a long chat anyway.

0720 Breakfast. I go for granola yoghurt bowl and blueberry pancakes.  Only person there. I wonder if many are in the hotel. Waitress tells me she hates this time of year because it is so quiet and she has less to do.

0820 I get myself ready. I plan to do a little walking and exploring but nothing high up. So I wear my new cargo shorts and remember to apply sunscreen.

First activity is to take funicular railway up to Sunnega.

0900 I get a ticket for the railway and board. I’m not sure of my plans so I get a return ticket because it’s much cheaper. But I might walk down if it looks easy enough. The funicular runs in a tunnel quickly up the hill. About 1000m vertically. Only takes 4-5 min. I could go further up by cable car but that’s not going to happen.

This time I remembered to bring my wide angle prime lens. I change it over and take a few shots. Tonight I’ll be able to see if they are any crisper. It’s a bit frustrating to use though as I’m so used to adjusting my telephoto lens to get the best framing. I guess I’ll be able to crop the others.

0947 After taking some pics I decide to head down one of the hiking trails. Not sure if I’ll take it all the way. First I need to make my way back to the funicular station. And then I need a little rest and a loo break! And some water.

1017 I head off. To begin with, I’m following path 6, Gourmetweg.

Amazing views. Carpets of alpine flowers. Cabins. The sound of cow bells in the distance. Gentle breeze. Birdsong. Bees and butterflies. Now an alpine stream.

I come to a junction. There is a quick way down to Zermatt or a longer way across the ridge that comes out closer to my hotel. I choose that.

Spectacular terrain and views. Beautiful forest trees and lush greenery. Winding paths opening to dramatic views.

1155 I change to path 4 and start my decent.

1230 Reach Zermatt.

1240 Back in the hotel. My legs are wobbly and I need a rest before my next adventure. This morning was amazing. So glad I decided to walk down. Walking along ridge was breathtaking. And walking along and down wasn’t difficult at all.

1315 Still feeling a bit exhausted but that might also be hunger. Will head out on next trip to find Gorner Gorge and find some lunch along the way. I grab a tuna roll.

1400 Arrive Gorner Gorge.

Amazing! The power of the water coming down from the melting ice is incredible. The boardwalks take you up the gorge.

1420 At the top I need to rest to catch my breath. Chat to a lovely Dutch couple before starting the trek back to Zermatt.

1650 Back at the hotel. There seem to be more people around now. I hear other people on this floor for the first time too.

Feeling quite stiff.

1745 I go down to the bar to have a drink while I work on my blog. Definitely busier. Must be the weekend.

1900 I may as well have some dinner in the bistro.

I’m really pleased with the way I’ve spent my days here. I had feared that I might squander my time. But I’ve been out and active and seen some amazing sights. I don’t feel 100% happy with all my photos; still having difficult working with my new glasses. But that’s all secondary.

Dinner is delicious. Bouffalo Bourguignon and a glass of Malbec. Desserts looked great but no room.

0850 Time to chill out a bit before bed. I will pack in the morning; it’s getting easier. Need to rest off dinner before bed.

Gornergrat

0400 The bed is really comfortable and the room is cosy. But it’s too warm. I struggle to sleep. Also, something is worrying me but I’m not sure quite what. I try opening the window. The windows are unusual. You can pull them ajar but I’m not sure just how much fresh air comes in. Plus there’s an air movement sound that increases when they’re open. But if it cools the room I don’t mind. The temp outside is 7 degrees so I hope it helps.

0550 Opening the window seems to help a bit and I eventually get back to sleep only to be woken by my alarm at 0530! I had set it for game time with Em and forgot to reset when plans changed. Doh! Oh well, may as well lift the blind to see outside. The sky is clear and there is a soft light. Maybe I’ll have a morning walk.

The room has a coffee machine so I make one. That helps.

When I step outside I see the sun is rising on the Matterhorn so I rush back to get my camera. I get some shots but the lower mountains are still in darkness making the light difficult to get right. So I wait for a bit as the sun slowly lights up the mountains and hills. Magic! Still not quite as much light as I’d like but I need to get back so I can have breakfast and then head out proper.

0710 I head down for breakfast. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. Nice and quiet at this time too. Breakfast is nice. Huge bread basket, juice, yoghurt and muesli, scrambled eggs and bacon. Not cheap though: 30 CHF. But it should keep me going all morning.

0812 I’m at the station for Gornergrat Bahn.

0824 I’ve read the right side is the best but those seats go straight away. So I sit on the left.  At least I get a window seat. I’ll try for the other side on the way down. My plan is to go direct to the top and maybe stop at the stations on the way down. Still blue and clear. No great loss as there’s a lot of reflection on the windows anyway; not good for photos.

0901 Arrive.

The sun is in the perfect position.

I walk along a fairly easy trail to a large rock outcrop that gives amazing views.

Away from the people you can hear a constant soft hum of wind echoing through the mountains.

I could keep walking down to the next station but I’d like a break and some refreshment. The walk back is hard; partly due to my lack of fitness and partly the altitude. I need to rest multiple times.

1014 I make it back to the top station. That was tough. Glad I didn’t attempt any hikes. Just not up to it. But also glad I did wear my hiking boots. They were needed.

It’s cold and clear up here. Around 7 degrees. At first I had put my spray jacket on but too hot now. T-shirt is fine while I cool down.

There are heaps of people up here now. Glad I came when I did.

I see a waterfall from melting ice/glacier.

1030 I go to the café to get Apple streusel and coffee.

I can see cable cars going up the mountains.

For the first time I decide to try one of my prime lenses. Most of the time I use my telephoto because it’s a great all rounder. But I suspect a prime lens will be crisper and I’ve got one that should be great for landscape. EXCEPT, I remember that I was thinking it was a waste bringing them and left them in the hotel to reduce the weight in my backpack. Doh!

1257 Since the café was self serve and easy I decide to hang around for lunch. Pork sausage, vegetables and onion sauce.

I’ve seen lots of paragliders flying between the mountains.

In the end I’m not disappointed that I didn’t get a good seat on the train; I got lots of awesome views from the station and viewpoint.

1243 Train back departs to go back down.

1251 Arrive at Rotenboden. Worth the stop.

In good conditions you will get reflections in the lake but today there’s a breeze and too many ripples. Still some nice perspectives.

1336 Train departs. Lovely family from New York on Switzerland holiday. Mother remarks that she likes my accent.

Since midday, the tip of Matterhorn has been shrouded in cloud. Feeling lucky I got it when it was clear.

1356 Arrive Riffelalp.

Get nice views down to Zermatt.

1420 Depart.

1430 Arrive Findelbach. I decide to walk the last part. Lovely forest with occasional glimpses of mountains. It takes me to a more quiet part of Zermatt. Maybe this is where the locals live? The same architecture but on a smaller and quainter scale.

1513 I reach the main part of Zermatt. I get some supplies. I think I’ve caught a bit of sun so I get some aloe Vera gel.

1543 Get back to the hotel. Pooped but I feel I’ve really made the most of today. Time to relax and sort through photos.

I get out of my sweaty walking clothes, have a long shower and apply the aloe gel. Feeling much better. It’s quite warm down in Zermatt. 19 degrees and clear. It’s been an almost perfect weather day.

It’s very nice sitting in my window seat.

1826 Not sure if I’ll have dinner. Dinner in the restaurant doesn’t start until 7pm which is late for me. If I was starving hungry I would go, but I’m not really.

Geneva to Zermatt

0630 OK, time for coffee.

0730 Breakfast.

0830 Packed. I’ve expanded the suitcase again so that my extra bag will fit on overhead racks easier.

0930 Ready to go. I activate my rail pass for today and add my journey. Fails first time but then OK. So far so good.

I get up to date with blog posts.

1000 Check out.

1015 The train station is literally across the road. When I get there I get my bearings. Everything seems to be OK. Just need to wait. Closer to departure I will pick up some lunch to take with me. There’s a Pret here!

1055 I’m hopefully on the right platform. Current train isn’t mine but next one should be.

1100 The sign just changed and that’s my train! Phew!

1110 On the train. Not a huge amount of large luggage space but enough. Very nice train! And some interesting seating areas in addition to the usual. And announcements in English as well as French and German. Oddly, the most luggage space was in the upper deck. Not very smart.

According to my rail app, I should get off this train at Visp to change for Zermatt. But Visp isn’t being announced. I’m not too worried because the final stop Brig is only the next station and I can easily get a train to Zermatt from there. And having my Eurail pass means it’s easy to catch different trains.

Vineyards on terraces just out of Lausanne.

Trainline runs along side of Lake Geneva.

From Montreux, Visp starts appearing on the display board. Phew!

It’s a very calm, quiet and comfortable train ride.

1250 A first glimpse of a small amount of snow on one of the mountain tops.

1323 Arrive Visp. Train signs are in German now.

1341 Depart. First class is quiet and spacious. Shortly after leaving Visp they engage the cog wheel for the first time.

Can hear my ears popping..

1451 Arrive.

Wow! Unlike anywhere I have been before. Very busy. Beautiful.

Hotel 8 min walk. Staff greet me in English and are super friendly and helpful. Room is amazing with lovely picture window. Could not be happier.

1551 I head out to get information.

1650 I’ve had a lovely walk around the town. So different!

I spend time sitting in my window seat and checking out activity options.

I’ve noticed that my ankles are swollen the last couple of days.

1840 I notice the light and head out with my camera to get my first shots of the Matterhorn with blue sky.

I spend the evening sitting in my window seat making plans. Seems like I might have missed some opportunities by leaving things to the last minute. Never mind.

Not really hungry so I skip dinner.

2120 Bed.

Geneva

0630 I slept well. Room is small but comfortable. Actually about same size as last London room. Aircon worked and low fan was quiet. I was still a bit warm at times but ok.

Weather is mild. Currently 20 degrees. Rain forecast for mid afternoon.

When I checked in last night, the clerk mentioned that the TV wasn’t working and offered to change room or give discount. Nice of them to offer rather than rely on my complaint. Didn’t matter to me anyway and I used the discount to add breakfast. Win!

0735 I head down to breakfast. Managed OK and English seems to get me by OK. The breakfast buffet is certainly not on par with the Radisson breakfast but it will do and it’s half the price.

Feel a little shaky today. A bit of nerves and a bit of stress fallout from yesterday.

0915 After a lot of faffing about and some planning, I head out. Sun-screened and ready.

Managed to get cash from ATM. Sim is harder because they require passport and I didn’t bring it out. No rush because I’ve got roaming today. And actually, the one I found sounded good but super expensive. On reflection, paying the Optus roaming charges would be cheaper.

1000 Passed over bridge. River flowing so fast and water so blue/turquoise.

Have noticed slightly more mask wearing in Europe.

1045 I reach an information point. I was thinking of a short lake cruise. The information is confusing and I’m wasting good light. So I skip for now to walk around the lake more.

I walk to Le Jet d’eau. Very impressive. And just as interesting to see where the water falls as it is to see it rise.

1130 It’s 24 degrees with a light breeze. I sit on the jetty for a little while. It’s getting busier now, so a walk back through the old town would be too hard for photos. Besides I got a lot. Might walk to the other side of the lake and check out cruises at the same time.

There are a number of beaches on the lake and they are busy.

Just realised! Why did I put a phone number label on my phone. Should have been email. Doh!

1221 First light spots of rain. I’ve walked quite a bit and my legs are sore. Probably still from yesterday. Feeling pecking so I should think about lunch. Then a short downpour. Lucky I have my umbrella.

1248 I find a Wasabi for a healthy lunch and manage ok with language. They have a machine to handle cash payments. Feeling pleased that I managed OK.

I find that if I start with “Parlez vous Anglais?” rather than just speaking English I tend to get a better response. Adding “Merci” is a good move too.

That reminds me, on the train to Geneva there was a mum, her mum and kids. They were all very polite and friendly. I had originally tried to confirm with her that I was on the right train and tried with a combination of English and pointing. Later, as the number of passengers got smaller we sort of had a little group of us. She was offering around biscuits and I remembered to say “Merci”. She commented “That’s good sir” to acknowledge that I tried.

1318 Finished lunch. I’m near the hotel, so I will drop by for the loo. Then will walk out again while the weather is still OK.

1350 I return to the lake and the light is better so I retake some photos.

1420 I wander back and find the floral clock then stop for a very delicious pistachio soft serve.

I get a ticket for a 1 hour lake cruise.

1505 Depart.

It’s a nice way to spend an hour.

1604 Return.

Lemon sorbet by the lake.

1622 It’s been a long day and I’ve been standing up for most of it. Will grab some cold refreshments from a supermarket then get back to the hotel to chill. I need to plan tomorrows journeys.

Supermarket shop was easy.

1648 Back at hotel. I had a large and healthy lunch so I just grab a baguette for dinner.

I work photos and blog and just chill.

2100 I had an idea to check out Le Jet d’eau when it is lit up in the evening. I had thought it would happen at 9pm and have been waiting around. But I check and it is after sunset. I’m already tired, so I’m not going to wait for that.

From Calm to Chaos

Today’s challenge is to travel from London to Geneva, via Paris.

0500 The alarm goes off. It takes a moment to realise that I need to get up and pack. NOW! My head! Not the worst but definitely worse for wear after last night out with Alan. Lots of fun though.

I manage to pack but still need separate bag. Might have fitted with expansion but feeling too shady to try. Hope it will be ok.

0630 Check-out of hotel and in taxi.

0700 Have got through passport control.  Just waiting for train now. Argh! Feel very shady.

0752 On board. Space for my large suitcase and plenty of space for my small bags. Nice seat with plenty of room. It’s a single seat but on the 2 seat side. So, a space next to me. That’s a huge relief. Standard premium.

0801 Depart. Feeling unexpectedly excited.

Continental breakfast. Enough to keep me going.

0950 Emerge from the Chunnel.

26 degrees and clear in Paris.

1120 Arrive.

1130 Waiting for taxi. Lots of people waiting. Glad I allowed more time. Big argument between taxi driver and taxi ramp attendant.

1219 Arrive Gare de Lyon. About 20 euros.

I grab a sandwich and drink then make my way to the lounge. I wouldn’t have made my original connection, but now I have 2 hours until my next train. Seems to be running on time.

First time I’ve been a significant amount of time in a non-English speaking place for quite some time. A bit daunting but I seem to be managing so far.

1300 Train is cancelled. Email arrives in French. I eventually get explanation. Chaos! I feel so helpless.

After nearly two hours of total confusion I gather one option is to get a train to Lyon and then hope I can get a local train to Geneva. Seems my best bet as the ticket machines show no more trains to Geneva from Paris today and tomorrow’s seem to be booked out already.

1455 On train to Lyon. Will then try smaller train to Geneva. I book ticket using the app to ensure I get a seat on the next train. Train announcements only in French now. No idea what is being said. Hope it’s not important.

1703 Arrive.

Lots of trains cancelled on departures board including earlier trains to Geneva. Too early for mine to show. Might be spending the night here. I look on a couple of booking apps and hotel websites but can’t find any available rooms!

35 degrees here.

After a scare when the departure board went empty, my train is now up and just delayed by 30 min. Fingers are crossed.

1855 Now delayed 50 min. Nervous.

1925 Departed. Initially standing room only.

1949 First stop and many get off. Am able to sit down. Lucky cause my legs were shaking.

2013 I think we’re half way and traveling through steep cliffs with lots of vegetation.

2119 We cross the Swiss border.

2135 Arrive.

I can’t understate how terrifying today was. For a while it looked very likely I would be stranded in Lyon and finding accommodation was looking hard. I felt SO helpless. What would have happened if there was no train? In the end I just had to make a decision and hope for the best with little way of verifying. I need to factor in being stranded in my planning in future and try to minimise situations where that might happen. Or at least ensure it would be in a major city. Just relieved that it didn’t come to that.

2230 Bed!

London Museums

0530 I’ve slept much better and almost solidly until about 0430. After a couple of attempts to get back to sleep I decide to get a coffee and start planning the day. I was thinking of heading to Winchester today, but I had such a nice day in the city yesterday that I think I’ll stay around and do some museums today. I’ve read about a postal museum and it’s been ages since I last went to the science museum. Most museums have recommended booking a time so I’ve planned my day and got tickets. It means the day is a bit more fixed than I’d prefer but should be ok.

0730 Breakfast.

0800 I manage to finish two new blog entries.

0925 I head to the postal museum on foot. This time I’m going to take my umbrella. I pass some interesting street scenes and street art on the way.

0945 Arrive. A few people are waiting too. My timed ticket is for the mail rail so I need to start there.

1000 I get on the mail rail first. It takes a journey through the old mail tunnels.

1120 The rest of the museum is really interesting too. At the end I grab some morning tea from the café.

1130 I’m making good time so I walk back to the hotel to drop off my purchases.

1148 Arrive. The walk to the museum had been cool and quiet. It’s still now mild but a little humid and the crowds are beginning.

The first stay in this hotel was on the second floor. I used the stairs to go up and down. This time I’m in the sixth floor, so it’s the lift going up and stairs going down.

1200 Time to slowly walk to the next museum. I leave my umbrella; I can easily get between the next places by tube if need be.

1220 I get to Oxford circus. I’m early so I might try to find some lunch. Pret will do.

1300 I get to the Twist Museum. Lots of cool optical and sensory illusions. Many I have seen before but it’s still fascinating and a bit mind bending.

1340 I took my time but finished. Might have taken longer if I’d come with other people as some needed another person. Never mind.

1346 Victoria line from Oxford Circus to Green Park.

1349 Arrive.

1353 Piccadilly line to South Kensington.

1358 Arrive.

My ticket to the science museum is for 3pm so I have a little bit of time to kill. Seems like I timed things nicely. No rushing.

As I walk to the science museum I pass the V&A museum and remember that the Diva exhibition will have started now. I go in but tickets have sold out for today. I grab a drink instead and sit in the courtyard. The sun briefly appears.

1440 Still early so I take a stroll to a nearby park.

1500 I enter the science museum.

1630 I’ve had a nice wander through. Some exhibits I remember from last time and some were new. Flight was interesting and the original flight models were cool. I stop for a snack in the café before heading to the shop.

1700 I get another ingredients t-shirt. Then it’s time to make my way back.

1713 Piccadilly line from South Kensington to Holborn.

1726 Arrive. I thought it might be busy but it got more quiet as we progressed.

I drop past the hotel to pick up a shopping bag and head on to Sainsbury’s for some toiletries.

1758 Back at the hotel. I’m pooped! It’s been a long day and my feet are killing me. I feel that I’ve made very good use of the last 2 days.

London Galleries

0600 I had a really restless night.  I make a coffee.

0730 I head down for breakfast.

0800 I decide to make today a gallery day. Since most don’t open until 10am I have time to chill and do blog work.

1010 Central line from Tottenham Court Rd to Marble Arch.

1015 Arrive. Short walk to Frameless.

Impressive! The first gallery I enter is probably the coolest. It’s based on the art of the impressionists. The twist is that each painting starts as leaves and patches on the ground. People need to walk through them to disturb them and form the images on the walls. At first only one person seems to have got the idea and I’m a bit too shy to join in. But eventually I give it a go and it’s fun. The other galleries are good but less interactive. The last gallery had a little bit of an infinity mirror thing going which was a little unnerving but cool.

1155 I decide on a late morning tea at the gallery café.

1208 I head back to Marble Arch station. It’s been raining. The temperature is mild and not so humid.

1212 Central line to Notting Hill Gate.

1218 Arrive.

1226 Circle line to Sloane Square.

1235 Arrive.

1243 Walk to Saatchi gallery. I get. Ticket for the Civilisation exhibition. Amazing images.

1340 I finish the exhibition and walk through the shop. I was hoping for a smallish guide book but the only one is a full catalogue that is way too heavy to add to my luggage. What a shame.

It’s drizzling now. I should have brought my umbrella.

I decide to make my way to Tate Modern.

1343 Back to Sloane Square.

1352 District line to Blackfriars.

1401 Arrive.

1410 I walk to Tate Modern as the drizzle increases. I get there a little soggy but not too bad.

I get a ticket for the Capturing the Moment exhibition. Interesting and there are a couple of images that I like. In particular, a monochrome image of a sea horizon. Simple but powerful.

1500 I’m feeling hungry now but this place is very busy. I might go to the gallery shop then try and find some food elsewhere. In the shop I buy a set of “colours of London” coasters.

1330 I look in the gallery café but nothing interests me. I’ll start my way back to the hotel and find something on the way. It’s stopped raining. There’s an outdoor café/bar by the gallery that does pizza so I go for that and some cider. Fennel sausage. Ends up being bigger than I’d expected but in the end was just right but I’m full now.

The temperature is OK now but the rain has made it a bit humid. Still, it’s nice just hanging out here and watching the people go by. Might get another cider.

1630 There’s some blue sky poking though. And it gets warmer. I was going to find a direct route back to the hotel but I decide to wander along South Bank and take in the atmosphere instead. Lots of people and activity. Nice.

1700 I start to make my way back. Crossing the bridge to Embankment I get a little emotional at the iconic views of the city. I feel so happy that they are now so familiar. I wish I could see them more often.

1714 Northern line from embankment to Tottenham Court Rd.

1720 Arrive. So busy and so hot!

1730 I’m back at the hotel. There is a part of me that is saying “you’re in London, why are you going back to the hotel?”  But then I realise I’ve had a really fun and full day. Lots of walking and thinking and feeling. And now I’m pooped. It’s OK to want to chill. And after that late and large pizza I don’t need dinner.

Shower and into my PJs. A quiet night with some TV and early to bed I think.

Talybont Forest and Waterfalls

Julie and Karen have suggested a forest and falls where I might want to take some photos. It’s about 20 min from where we are staying. Julie, Cooper and I head there through narrow lanes. There’s a lovely walk through forest leading to a series of waterfalls and rock pools. It’s a magical place.

Wonderful Wales

Part of the purpose of this trip was to have another week away with my sister Julie and brother Alan. This time the destination was Wales so that we could catch up with our aunt, cousin and family. Rather than provide a minute by minute account, I’m going to condense most of the week into this one post.

Getting there

I had already been staying at Julie & Karen’s for a couple of days, so we headed off from there on Friday morning along with Cooper. It takes just over 7 hours but that’s including a couple of breaks and lunch. The holiday home is a barn conversion just outside of Brecon. It feels remote and the laneways from Brecon are very narrow with tall hedges on each side.

The home is a barn conversion connected to a house where the owners live. They are very welcoming and the home is spacious and rustic. It will be great for us. Outside there is lots of garden with great views. Inside the living area is upstairs and the roof windows offer glimpses of the surrounding areas.

In the evening we get fish and chips from Brecon.

Saturday

In the morning, we head to Brecon for a wander and to give Cooper a walk.

After lunch, Julie and I head to Abergavenny to collect Alan from the train station. It’s roughly a half hour drive. After collecting Alan we do our annual epic grocery shop. Though, is seems a little less chaotic this year. Main goal is to get supplies for a family BBQ tomorrow. After shopping we return to the barn where Karen and Cooper have been spending the morning. We catch up a bit and do some preparation work for the BBQ.

Sunday

We have invited Aunty Kate, cousin Mandy and her family over for a BBQ. The weather is cool and windy, so we decide to eat inside. As usual, we all get stuck in and make a mini-feast for the family. There will be left overs! It’s wonderful to catch up in person. The kids seem to have a great time too and Cooper is thoroughly worn out at the end of the day.

Monday

We head to Abergavenny mid morning for brunch at Portico Lounge. Afterwards, Julie and Karen take Cooper for a walk by the river while Alan and I do shopping for our cooking day tomorrow. In the evening it’s left over salads from the BBQ and cheese we bought at Madame Fromage in Abergavenny.

Tuesday

It’s becoming a tradition for Alan and me to have a cooking day while Julie and Karen have a day together. This year, Alan and I have selected recipes from a new middle eastern/Persian cookbook he’s bought. Julie and Karen go to visit a friend, taking Cooper. Alan and I make a timeline and spread the cooking through the day. In the end, we manage our time really well and it’s a lovely relaxing, successful and enjoyable day together. There will be left overs … again!

Wednesday

We have a lazy morning. I get some washing on to set me up for the last part of my holiday. Late morning we head off to meet Aunty Kate and Uncle Don for lunch at the Owls Nest Cafe. It’s great to see her again and to meet Uncle Don. But it’s very cold. The weather has been generally cool all week with cloudy, drizzly mornings eventually clearing up to partly sunny late afternoons. In the evening Julie makes a new dish with the remaining lamb and refreshes some of the dishes from yesterday.

Thursday

Julie and Karen have suggested a nice place with waterfalls that I might like to take photos. It will be a good walk for Cooper too. We wait until the rain looks like it’s passed. In the end it’s just Julie, Cooper and me. It’s about a 20 min drive through many single track lanes. But it’s worth the trip. I take lots of photos, so I’ll make a separate post just for that. In the evening, we go to a nearby pub with good reviews: Three Horse Shoes in Groesfford, near Brecon. It’s lovely food and this is also becoming a tradition. Karen takes the annual Cooper Kids photo.

Friday

It’s the end of our week already. We get cleaned and tidied up in plenty of time. Julie takes Alan and me to Abergavenny for the train back to London. Julie, Karen and Cooper then start the long drive home.

It’s been another wonderful week spending time together. Looking forward to the next time.

Sutton Heath and Lovely Lavenham

0630 I sleep really well.

0730 The family are up and I go down stairs. Coffee and some lovely toast.

0900 Julie and I head to Sutton Heath to walk Cooper. It’s about a 15 min drive. Lovely woods.

When Julie picked me up from Ipswich station yesterday, we walked around a bit. I noticed a number of old timber buildings which had surprised me for a large town. But then Julie told me about Lavenham. So today we’re making a little trip there.

1150 On the road to Lavenham.

1240 Arrive. Have a little walk around.

1300 We have lunch in a lovely little tea room.

After lunch, more wandering around the town.

Isle of Skye to Waldringfield

0600 I had a solid nights sleep. There was quite heavy rain at one stage but it’s just breezy with patchy cloud now. Cold though, 12 degrees. The last part of my sleep involved some very weird and disconnected dreams. Now I’m awake I still feel half in that alternative reality. Odd. I start with some coffee to try and ground myself. No time to waste this morning.

By starting my repack from scratch I think I’ve done a better job than when leaving London.

0745 Breakfast is done and most of the packing is finished. I’ve done a first clean up. Going well.

0930 The suitcase is packed well but still expanded. Hoping I can un-expand after Wales. All of the tidying is done plus some photo editing for the next blog post. Time to relax a bit before hitting the road.

1020 I’ve filled up the car and recycled my glass. I have a sandwich on the shore front. The taxi will pick me up in half an hour.

1100 Taxi arrives on time. The driver is chatty but lovely.

1120 Arrive Kyle of Lochalsh station. There is left luggage here though the taxi driver said I’d have no problem just leaving my bags on the platform! Not going to try that. And I’m happy to wait here anyway. Gives me encouragement that there will be decent luggage facilities in Inverness.

1140 I’ve boarded the train. Good luggage storage.

1208 Depart. Train about 1/3 full at this stage. Lots of people with luggage too.

1441 Arrive. It’s 18 with patchy cloud. The left luggage is easy to find. I get a ticket and an attendant helps me with a locker. That’s so handy.

1500 I pop into Costa for a snack and that coffee.

1533 I head to Ness Islands. They are a series of  small islands in the Ness river connected by foot bridges. Lots of trees and lovely paths.

1708 I’m quite exhausted, so I decide to head back to the station to get a drink and wait for the lounge to open. I spend some time editing photos and text for the next blog entry.

1830 I get my luggage and head to the lounge. It’s nice and comfortable. I do some more work on my blog. One problem I’ve been experiencing is that when my transition lens glasses (which I haven’t had before) go dark outside, it’s harder to judge whether a shot exposure was right when looking on the camera screen. I find myself tending to think I have underexposed and then retake the photo with greater exposure, when the first shot ends up being about right. I guess I’ll need to learn to compensate for the glasses.

2000 Boarded. Room identical but mirror and toilet on outside. Works better with my suitcase. This time I decide to have the room service breakfast. The options are lighter but, unlike the last trip, I’ll have a proper lunch time tomorrow. I get settled in and spend some time taking pics of the scenery.

2130 I get into my PJs and sit in bed watching more scenery go by. We’re in the Cairngorms National Park.

2200 Time to try and sleep. This train seems bumpier than the last. Let’s see how it goes.

One castle, two aborted drives and a beach walk

0330 I’ve slept well so far but make the fatal mistake of thinking when I wake. Takes a little while to get back to sleep.

0500 It’s very light outside but, no, still too early.

0630 I guess this will have to do. I get up. It’s blustery outside with patchy cloud. But the forecast doesn’t look so good. Do I really believe it?

Over breakfast I do a little work sorting pictures for my blog. I’m still not happy with my current workflow. Combining photos from my photo and camera is tricky enough, but then when I export edited photos out of Lightroom back onto the iPad it gets really confusing with multiple versions of photos that are really hard to distinguish. I need a better way. I work on devising one.

The weather today seems really unpredictable. It’s still only patchy cloud but very gusty. I want to head to Dunvegan today but much of the way will be minor road and I don’t want the added hassle of heavy rain. I decide to leave that until this afternoon when the forecast rain should be clearing. I decide to head to Eilean Doran Castle this morning instead. Since I went there with my big camera yesterday, I’ll be able to travel light with just my phone. That will be nice. The castle opens at 10 am.

0930 The rain sets in.

1100 I leave for the castle. It’s still raining but I know the way and I know the roads are good. There’s a lot of traffic for a Sunday morning. Which reminds me, so many camper vans and bikers!

1130 Arrive. It’s VERY busy here.

1200 I finish the tour. It’s quite small and very busy but interesting. There’s no photography allowed inside which seems quite rare these days but that’s ok. I’ll admit it does mean I take in more of the details. And I discover that the current castle is a rebuild from the early 20th century. Not apparent from the outside but the inside furnishing and services are definitely not medieval.

1215 It feels like lunch time so I have something in the café.

1245 After checking out the gift shop and food hall I head back to base. It’s still raining but gets lighter as I get back.

1341 I go back via Broadford to see if I can find a rucksack or bag to make the next pack easier but find nothing. At base I slip on the entrance and fall. Nothing injured just sore.

It’s crunch time to decide now whether to attempt Dunvegan today. It will be 1+ hours drive each way, on small roads with likely high tourist traffic and possible wet conditions. Just doesn’t seem like much fun to me. If the weather clears I’ll find somewhere scenic and close by to wander later. For now I can start to cleanup and do more blog work.

1515 I’ve posted another blog entry. Slowly catching up. The rain has stopped so I’ll look for a local option to explore.

It’s about 15 degrees. It’s hovered in the high teens for all of the stay here. Definitely long trouser weather. I notice it’s 30 in London today. Better have those shorts handy when we arrive in London on Tuesday morning.

1536 I decide on a drive to Elgol. Only 30 min drive. Still a minor road, but I can always turn back if I want.

1545 The moment I get off the A87 at Broadford I’m on a narrow one track road. I can’t do it today. I’ve been up a long time and I’m starting to feel tired and I just don’t want to. I’ll go for a walk from the cabin instead.

1602 Start my walk. It only takes about 15 min to get to the beach. It’s very pretty with rocks and islands. I wander around and get my walking boots thoroughly wet. On the way back I pass some cows enjoying a bit of shade.

1730 Back at the cabin.

1800 I know I will have plenty of time tomorrow but I feel I don’t have a plan so I map out one to get my timings and a checklist. Dinner time too.

1900 Cooper Family Call time.

2000 I start working through my exit checklist for tonight, including ringing to book a taxi for tomorrow. Anyone who knows me well will understand my trepidation at that last one - but I do it! Yay me! A woman took my booking and she will be my driver. She picked my accent and it’s clear to me that she’s going to want to chat the whole trip.

2200 Jobs done. Time for bed.

Uig, Portree, Eilean Donan Castle and all points in between

0524 I had a good solid sleep. I get up for weekly game time (Catan) with Em via zoom.

0600 Game time.

0800 I take the time to tidy up and sort photos from day 4.

I’ve decided to head to Uig today. Should be an easy drive and I see a different part of the island. The weather is drizzly but it should clear a bit.

1100 I depart. I should be able to take the A87 to whole way there.

1230 Arrive. Was slow drive due to weather and one sights stop.

Uig is a very small town. Not as pretty as I’d hoped. Not much to see. Weather slowly clearing.

1318 After walking around the sea front I head off to visit some nearby viewpoints and then make my way back towards Portree.

1430 Arrive Portree. Stop to look around. Much brighter now. Sun is quite warm.

Portree is quaint. Very busy with tourists. The sun clears more while I’m here.

1530 I decide to head back so I can get to Eilean Donan castle before closing. But there are so many sights along the way. Some I saw the other day but now the light is different or there is more water in the waterfalls. So I have to stop. I soon realise I won’t make the castle in time for last entry. So I may as well take my time. I can still visit and take some outside photos and it will be light for hours.

1808 I get to the castle. There’s a great vantage point on the west side with great sunlight. Of course, when I get there the sun gets a bit shy. But I wait because it will be worth it. And it is. Iconic!

1830 Time to head home. I’m pooped.

1700 Arrive.

Time for simple dinner and downloading and backing up photos for the day.

The other day driving to the Old Man of Storr I had my first experiences of driving on single lane tracks but it was still quite easy. Today there were a couple of more challenging ones, perfectly doable if you don’t panic and take your time.

2120 It certainly doesn’t feel this late. And I don’t really feel tired. I’ve spent a couple of hours working on my blog and I think I just need to chill now.

I think I got some sun today - in the few minutes that the sun was fully out.

Having the loft bedroom dormer windows open at night let’s a lovely fresh breeze in.

The Old Man of Storr

I sleep solidly until midnight and then again until about three when I start to see light.

0400 I check the time. It’s very light. I want to be up and out early today but this is TOO early. I doze a couple more times.

0530 Still tired but I can feel my brain turning on so maybe I will stir. Later in my stay the weather isn’t looking so good, so I will lay in a bit later then.

It’s so lovely outside. Cool but nice. Sky clearing. I have breakfast, shower and get myself ready. A bit of planning required since it’s been a while since I last did a proper walk. I should have bought trail snacks yesterday.  I make a marmalade sandwich instead.

0800 Time to hit the road. My primary goal is to walk to the Old Man of Storr; an iconic rock formation you can see for miles around. I stop for a few photos along the way.

0924 I reach the car park. It’s busy already.

It’s by no means a hard walk but it’s not a push over either. The trail is full of every age. Many people with their dogs both large and small. I need many stops to catch my breath. I realise just how out of shape I am. But I would make those stops to take photos anyway, so no loss. The objective is a ridge just past the Old Man. I can see people standing up there looking back the Old Man. It looks precarious but I want to check it out.

1058 I reach the top. Not anywhere as precarious as it looked but an amazing 360 view. Good 4G signal too! Lots of people, but ok. Weather was perfect on the way up but colder and slightly damp from top down. I eat my marmalade sandwich in this magical place.

1140 I decide to head down. Then I notice people walking in a further small path. I decide to investigate. More awesome scenery and some sheep. A ram is standing on the cliff edge calling out.

1210 Time to head down - really this time.

Part way down there’s a guy playing a sort of Celtic flute. Amazing.

1300 Back down. There’s a coffee shack just past the car park and I desperately hope it’s open. It is! A nice flat white and a muffin while I gaze at the islands off the coast. And some bagpipes have just started up across the road.

1346 I couldn’t do another big walk or climb but I’m ok to do something. I decide to head to Lealt falls.

1400 On my way the sun comes out to finally light up the islands I’ve been trying to photo - now I’m on the road! But a lookout is up ahead and makes a great stop.

1418 I’m at Lealt lookout.

1450 I think I should start heading home.

1502 I stop at small waterfall.

I make a few more stops on the way home as I see photo opportunities.

1706 Finally home. There have been many photo stops along the way. Very nice to have my own transport and the time to just stop when I want. I also popped in to the co-op in Broadford for more supplies.

It’s very warm and sunny with only patchy cloud. And still so peaceful.

1900 After dinner I force myself to work on my blog. First I need to finalise a workflow so I don’t get mixed up. I have two objectives: making a blog and ensuring at least some kind of cloud backup.
