Last night, I went to Emily and Ash's for an astronomical double bill: Mars in the evening and a blood morning in the (very) early morning. We had a lovely evening with some lovely people, though the telescope and camera weren't doing the event all that much justice. I headed to bed early in the cosy vardo. Around 5:00 am next morning we were up to view the blood moon. Again, the camera didn't capture all the magic. But that doesn't matter - it was a wonderful experience and such a beautiful start to the day.
... all lit up you look so pretty!
Before leaving Australia I purchased two tickets for the Empire State Building with the express purpose of experiencing it in the day and at night. As the skies were still clear I decided tonight was an opportunity not to be missed.
Armed with some wise photography tips from my friend Steve, I headed off at dusk. Unfortunately I miscalculated how quickly the sun would set and consequently got there a little later than I think would have been optimal. But it was still just as breathtaking.
Once again my express ticket ushered me past snaking line after snaking line. I cannot emphasise this enough; if you ever go, spend the little extra for an express ticket. I must have passed many hundreds of people. I can't imagine how long they'd been waiting for.
So this was my first attempt at serious night time photography with this camera and as you can imagine there are a number of parameters to play with. Unfortunately, the small the screen on the camera makes it hard to really tell which are working the best. I should have checked the histograms but I didn't think of it at the time. Now I've seen them on my iPad I feel I could fine tune and do better. But they're still the best night time shots I've ever been able to achieve. Thanks Steve!
On the way back to the hotel I passed the pop-up food stalls in Greeley Square that I encountered on Saturday. I was feeling peckish so got myself some goats cheese and rosemary "mac & cheese". Very tasty.
As it was still 20 blocks to the hotel I decided to take the subway. Unfortunately I caught the wrong line, but luckily figured out my mistake before getting too far off track. Before long I'd made my way back to the right line and the 14th street station safe and sound.
I've been meaning to try and capture how beautiful this city can be at night ever since I've been here. Tonight was my perfect (and final) opportunity. These are Regent Street at night. They still don't do it justice.
These should need no explanation.
And finally, some other shots I took along the way.
Goodnight London.
Tonight was the opening of the festival of lights which runs for 12 days. Here's a link to the promotional video. I decided to go back to Potsdamer Platz where the official count down would occur. So I jumped back on the U2 line which actually takes me straight there. I was there early so had plenty of time to get a spot and practice getting my camera settings right to capture the light images. I must admit I had a few "pinch me" moments when I realized I was across the other side of the world at such an event.
The count down came and the show began. After staying at the start for a while I followed the massive crowd as we wandered east across the city. Luckily all the walking I've been doing held me in good stead and I actually recognized where we were going.
There are lots of illuminations across the city and I only saw a few tonight. Unfortunately, what I saw underwhelmed me a little. It was still good and a great event to be part of. Here's the best of what I managed to capture. I thought the lights on the Brandenburg Gate were the best.
As I haven't been feeling well and I leave for Berlin early in the morning I'd decided not to go out tonight. I just didn't feel like it. And although I want to experience as much as I can on this trip I don't believe in forcing yourself just for the sake of it. So I headed off to bed early. Around 11:30 I awoke to the distant sounds of music and people. It captured my attention. I still didn't feel like immersing myself in it, but I was interested in observing the nightlife. So I got dressed and headed out, just for a short time. At nearly midnight the streets were still busy with people going from one place to another. Small groups walking together or sitting by the canals talking. I headed to one of the gay streets to check out what the bars I had heard of were actually like at night and they were busy. Bursting out of their small venues and spilling into the streets. On another day I would have ventured in, but tonight I kept on walking and slowly made my way back to the apartment.
It was only a little journey, but I'm glad I did it. I'm so sleepy now. Good night Amsterdam.
Tonight I decided I needed to walk my dinner off so I headed out again around the apartment. As the sun set the streets and canals took on an unexpected beauty. Without a tripod there's no way my camera could capture it but here are my best attempts.
And I took this little bit of video that partly captures a different aspect. It was just beautiful. This city is really surprising me.
